yeah, i haven’t posted in this in a while. oops.

anyway, i finally got my new site up and running. it’s sort of an evolution from kitsune paradise. it is called kitsuria network. the concept is the same – roleplaying and gaming community. it’s mostly just less (seemingly) restricted to just kitsune. the name comes from the world where my story “kitsurian chronicles” is taking place, and while it does have a dense kitsune population, many other species are present as well. the forums themselves remain open for just about anything. i just have a few small things to finish on the site, and i can do those while doing actual work on the story.

what sucks is, it took me a long time to get to this point. besides procrastination, the apartment where i live is having electrical problems. at random intervals the power in half the apartment would just blink out for some amount of time. my bedroom happens to be on that half, and that’s where my main computer is. so i guess i can justify this by just plain being unmotivated because of this – i mean, i’d hate to be working hard on something just to lose it all due to a 5 second power hiccup. and this has been going on for three months. we’ve been contacting management about this to no avail.

on other news, i will be working on a new version of this blog, which will be hosted on the new domain. it might take a while since i’ve got other projects to work on. but, it will be better than this one.

well, finally, i got myself a “new” phone. and by “new”, i mean it is new to me. i bought it used off of e-bay. it may not be an upgrade as far as hardware specs go (first-gen mytouch 3g), but the fact it runs android is good enough for me. it’s good enough to hold me over until i can afford something more high end.

after activating my phone yesterday, i rooted it and installed cyanogenmod. it is far more responsive than my old phone. it runs great, even after having a few apps running in the background.

of course, something good doesn’t come without a few quirks. first thing i noticed was the in-call volume being very low, even at the highest setting and installing an audio hack (which worked awesomely for other sounds). another problem i have is that it doesn’t seem to detect when i plug it into either of my computers. according to osmonitor, it only believes that it’s getting AC power. the message log shows…some things i don’t quite understand that may be relevant to the issue (see pastebin).

other than those two issues, i can say i’m very happy with this phone. it makes me wish i went with android before.

yes, now i’ve decided to start using my livejournal again. to make updating it easier, i’ve decided to crosspost all my posts from my wordpress blog starting today. also, due to the massive amounts of spam comments i’ve been getting on livejournal, comments can only be made on my wordpress blog so i can manage them more easily.

so my walk to work was interrupted by this black guy who wanted to rob me. he stopped me in my tracks and told me to empty my pockets. i told him "no". i ran across the street, hoping to outrun him, but he caught up (i keep forgetting that black people run fast). so, he had me cornered, and continued to try and get me to empty my pockets, and give him whatever was in the grocery bag i was carrying (i had 4 frozen entrees and some sushi). he punched me in the face, and i proceeded to wail on him with the grocery bag. he knocked me down to the ground, and i pushed him away with my feet, aiming for his groin. i saw the gate to a nearby apartment complex open, and i ran in there as fast as i could, and got away from the guy.

the first thing i did was check to see if anything was missing. my headphones were broken - the wire broke in two. my DS was missing, ... and that was all i noticed at the time. i called into work, at first to attempt to get a ride from a coworker. failing that, i let them know i was going to be late. i then logged into my server from my phone, and arranged for a ride from a mutual friend of mine and Alynna's. when he got there, i searched the ground where the fight took place for my DS, and heard music playing (i was listening to MP3s on my DS), then found it by following the sound. he then drove to pick Alynna up, and took us to Quik Stop. i clocked in 45 minutes late.

after i got there, i filed a police report about the incident. not sure they're going to do anything about it, but hopefully they catch that guy.

Also, HIM's new album (Venus Doom) comes out today, and Digimon World: Dawn and Dusk come out. I plan on getting Venus Doom and Digimon World: Dusk. And I'm gonna enjoy them both. :)

Being sick and tired of Capital One badgering me for a payment, I decided to get revenge on them...

Collections Bitch calls me, tells me how much I am over, and asks to arrange a payment. Okay, I tell her I'll go through with that, tell her I'll pay $150, and make it for this coming Friday. When she asked me for my bank's routing number, I told her to hold on, and I held the phone to my computer speakers, and blasted Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" into the phone. She was like WTF, and quite possibly not too happy. Me and Alynna were laughing our asses off.

Next collections agent to call me will get the Numa Numa song. Just try me. >:)

downloaded a program named 'pocketposter'. it seems pretty decent. at least it's not russian like ppc2lj or streetjournal, with no obvious english language option. this does what i need it to do, and it's english. so i am satisfed.

On February 8th, I notice that the login.php file was missing on Kitsune Paradise's forums. So I replace that, and made a post telling people I plan on changing the directory the site's stored in, to try and work around the spontaneous disappearance of this file. I go to bed, and wake up to find my site somehow redirected to an ad. I thought the computer was infected with adware at first, but when I viewed it on my laptop, under Linux, it redirected again. So, I check the source code, and there are TONS of <iframes> inserted at the beginning of the page. This was nowhere in any of the templates, header/footer wrappers, etc. I logged into my server, and checked the PHP files, and there, I found, a line added to the end of each and every one, that <iframe> code. alynna instructed me on how to quickly remove the line from all those files. We looked at the logs and noticed only the error log was being written to, and in it, someone was running 'find' and 'rm'. Evidently, I was hacked.

We thought it was a flaw in IPB, so I closed off access to every IPB on the site (mainly, just the main site and the memory chamber), and worked on installing phpBB. I also fixed the logging issues.

Though, it took me until this morning to figure out what was happening. I checked the error log and saw the same 'find' and 'rm' entries. I checked the access logs, for the time when the commands were being executed, and I saw an odd entry..."http://dkradio.kitsuneparadise.com/index.php?act=(url_to_an_image_here)". So I checked the URL myself, and this is what I saw: http://www.kitsuneparadise.com/~samui/images/hax

That is some crazy shit right there. And that showed me HOW I got hacked, and what was going on this whole time. Someone was using an XSS (Cross-Site Scripting) attack against me, injecting their own code to execute commands remotely on my server. That is what had been going on, since November, that had baffled me and Alynna. Someone was exploiting my PHP coding. Which was expected, considering I was new to PHP. And maybe I should have put more thought into it rather than just having my scripts include any old thing that one would put into the 'act' variable. But I'm still new to PHP, I'm still learning things. And this had taught me a very valuable lesson, the hard way.

Now that I have fixed the various holes in my scripts, things are back to normal. I don't see any 'find' or 'rm' commands being run. Logfiles are not spontaneously vanishing. And 'sysctl' isn't being used either, which means THAT was also being executed by a hacker as well.

So now, I can return to my normal projects that need to get done.

since we lost the receipt and the original packaging, the phone will not be returnable. though i am sure someone would buy it on e-bay.

as for my finances - i'm $76 in the hole in my bank account, but that will be fixed tomorrow with my paycheck. and, i've arranged with capital one to pay $100 on Saturday - which will bring me closer to normality on my credit card. reserved money towards my share of rent, which will leave me enough to pay for phone, then munchies at work.

verizon and comcast can wait 'til my next paycheck. i'll use part of that to open a savings account that will be used to save up for stuff and a fallback in case these overdrafts happen again.

so, yeah, i got things back under control.

seems my bank account got overdrafted. things got charged later than i thought they did. luckily, it will all be fixed on friday, with plenty to spare for bills and foodstuffs.

if i had not paid the electric bill before the con, i'd have $150 extra to spare. that would have prevented this problem. (the bill was due on the 29th, payday is this friday - so, yes, that could have waited).

oh, and maybe if aly and i return that piece of shit phone i got her...maybe, i would be able to fix it before friday. tomorrow, we should try that.

I got home from FC 2007 last night. I had the time of my life.

Met a lot of new people, got several t-shirts and shiny things, upgraded my ears and tail, had sushi, and played with my wii. This was the best con I ever attended.

I'm working on saving up for the next con I go to, which might be AnthroCon.
